The stars of the ruggedly-beautiful show that is the Macedon Rages are, without a doubt, Mount Macedon itself, towering over the region with panoramic views over hundreds of square kilometres and the mysterious formations of Hanging Rock, said to be the world's most perfect example of this volcanic feature known at mamelon and is the only example outside of Scandinavia. The unusual outcrop has also been the home to bushrangers during the goldrush, prestigious horse-race-events and even the inspiration for literature and film.
Mount Macedon was, for many years, the home of the rich and the famous and as you wind your way up the narrow road that leads to the summit you can glimpse beautiful landscaped gardens hiding amongst the dense wild bush. The enormous cross, a memorial to Australia's fallen servicemen, that greets you at the top looks all the way out to Port Phillip and is a favourite spot for visitors and locals alike who return time and time again, my car and, more adventurously, by bicycle and by foot.
Otherwise known as the "well-being" centre of Victoria, the village of Daylesford, nestling in the gorgeous sweep of the Macedon Ranges, is surrounded by an area which is home to 80% of Australia's natural mineral waters. This tour offers the unusual and surprising opportunity to taste, test and sample the surprising variety of flavours and varieties of mineral springs as well as a visit to an award winning winery's cellar-door for the more traditional wine tasting.
Many members of the tour opt for a mineral-spa therapy session before leaving the quaint and beautiful town to head back to Melbourne.
