Events in Western Australia
This modern city has something for everyone
Western Australia accounts for around a third of Australia’s landmass and is known for clear blue skies and long days of glorious sunshine. We shouldn’t be surprised, then, that WA offers more events, festivals and celebrations than there are days of the year so you’d better get planning now before you miss out on any others.
Perth, the state’s capital and home to roughly three quarters of its population, is an artistic hub. It is home to Australia’s oldest cultural festival, The Perth International Arts Festival, founded in 1953. The venerable old girl plays host to the brightest and best local, aboriginal and international acts and artists from the world of theatre, music, film, literature and dance and is an annual favourite.
Perth is also becoming a hotspot for fashion and the showcase, The Perth Fashion Festival, is now in its 16th fabulous year. The long, hot summers create the perfect backdrop for a life lived out of doors and, as such, is a music festival paradise that hosts superstars and musical giants from all around the planet. From Stereosonic to Laneway and from the Big Day out to Blue n Roots, the summer months have always had their own soundtrack in WA.
The year in Western Australia has become a carousel of major sporting events and attracts the world’s greatest athletes to competitions such as the The Perth International - Australia’s richest golf purse- The Surf Lifesaving Championships, World Masters Athletic Championships, the Boomerang World Cup and The Margaret River Drug Aware Pro surfing comp.
Cycling, here, is also a big deal and you can catch the brightest stars on two wheels at Velofest and the gruelling Cape-to-Cape mountain bike race. With a huge outback and hundreds of rural communities there is also a huge amount of country hospitality to go around at thousands of farmers markets, food and wine festivals, rodeos, garden and flower shows, and local music fests and musters. The most spectacular of outback events this year is the Australasian Safari which is hailed as one of the toughest motoring events on earth, covering 3000km and seven days of WA’s diverse terrain.
These barely scratch the surface of a hugely exciting state of events so however you experience the extraordinary in Western Australia, experience it with World Blue.
