The Sydney Film Festival - 4th - 15th June 2014
The twelve days that The Sydney Film Festival descends on the harbour city are etched into the NSW cultural calendar and, now in it's 60th year, is one of the planet's longest running celebrations of cinema. Showcasing over 400 short films, documentaries, full length features and animations from local film makers and directors as well as international heavy hitters, this year's offering is sure to be a hit with the critics and the public alike.
The flagship event of the festival has, since 2008, been the Official Competition in which 12 of the worlds best feature-films go head to head and are judged on their emotional power, resonance and audacity, their courage and their ability to go beyond the usual treatment of the subject matter...
...and what subject matter! From flemish bluegrass bands to Indonesian gangsters, Dutch troglodytes, Berliner Hipsters, the Thai Underground and the first film ever to be made by a Saudi woman, Haifaa Al Mansour, about a little girl who wants for nothing but a bicycle.
The key venues across the city are the State theatre, the Festival Hub at Lower Town Hall, Event Cinemas on George Street, Dendy Opera Quays, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, Art Gallery of NSW, Martin Place Amphitheatre, the Festival Lounge at Grasshopper and the Apple Store.
As ever, a fascinating element of events such as these is not just the showcasing of the world's greatest talents and the, arguable, pandering to critics but the cinema-goers experiences and opinions,. This year the SFF are giving the (app-toting-smart-phone-owning) public the opportunity to bestow their own laurels on the beauty, comedy, courage and poignancy of the offerings from a 'laymans'perspective. We will all, as I am sure so too will the directors, keep one eye on the results as they filter through, rating the films from 1 (poor) to 5 (instant classic).
So get yourself to the SFF and explore the city. While you're there, let World-Blue.com look after those accommodation needs; from budget beds from as little as $41pppn to unbridled, unapologetic luxury, we got it.
